Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway

Wikipedia

The Railroads took over the world, from the middle of the 19th Century to the middle of the 20th.

My family was involved with the Santa Fe in Ft. Madison, Iowa. It's hard for me to remember now how important it was back then. The West End of the town was devoted to the Santa Fe, and the East to the Schaeffer Pen. (There was also a Penitentiary for the less fortunate.)

It is now part of the American Rust Belt, full of empty buildings. The only thing active there now is the Mississipi River, that is subject to frequent flooding.
