What happened to Orosi?

First of all, we have to define what the different parts of Orosi are.

This is not difficult, and can easily be seen from the overlook provided for the convenience of visitors. Three new subdivisions have been built to the South of town, populated with small, cheap houses. These were built on land formerly used by coffee farms.

The owners of these houses commute daily, by bus or car, to jobs outside of the Valley,

The only industry, that used to employ lots of people, that grew exotic plants in greenhouses, is gone. Even the greenhouses have been removed. The land they used now stands vacant.

No one planned this huge change in the economy, it just happened. And its effects are poorly understood.

The new residents have no connection to what Orosi was a few years ago. That attracted lots of visitors, The visitors have moved elsewhere, mostly to Guanacaste and the West Coast. That are rapidly developing.

The leaves Orosi with many vacant hotel and hostel vacancies. Many businesses (including the rafting company) have closed down. Tourist buses, that used to be common, are less frequent. There is not much here for tourists to see, or feel.
