Dmitri Shostakovich, Lahav Shani conducts – With Yuja Wang

This gal is about as naked as she can be, and still be a concert pianist.

Stalin did not like Shostatakotich, and her naked body probably saved both of them.

Computers are getting Smarter all the Time

But People are getting stupider.

Why is this? because the computer doesn't want them to look smart.

Please comment on this, your computer will not mind.

The Government vs the Individual

I continue to read Tools and Weapons.

It is showing how Microsoft is protecting the information its customers have stored in its cloud. Amazon, Google, and Apple are doing the same thing.

This is a right it got from the British courts. And is one reason the Britsh Empire covered the whole world. It made its individuals powerful, and they made all of them powerful.

Until recently, when the Internet and its clouds, do the same thing.

The Mormon Economy

I was raised in the RLDS church, not the LDS church, we were Missouri Mormons, not Utah Mormons.

For my parents, we were the One True Church, and that was all that mattered. It had always provided a modest amount of sexual satisfaction, and it continued to do so.

When I graduated from the U of Illinois, in 1959. It was obvious to me that the Church was not important, and I left it.

Not long after, the church splintered into many groups, with the largest group still centered in Independence, Mo.

This was close to Kansas City, Mo - where I got my first job as Electronic Engineer.

I married a church girl, who lost her mind and killed herself. Those were difficult times, for the Church also. It had some solid institutions, a college, a hospital, and a retirement home. But it lost all of them.

The Utah group did much better, economically.

A Rom-Com That’s Really an Ode to Female Friendship

New Yorker

This is a review of a review, I didn't know what a rom-com was.

This shows how text can introduce you to much more, as it always has.

My Visit to Walmart

I  went to get some ink for my printer but ended up evaluating their cafeteria. In both cases, I was unfavorably impressed.

Bear in mind that this is Costa Rica, and Ticos come here to absorb some American culture. To learn the best way of doing things.

What they are learning is something very American: to treat people badly.

"This is not just American, you may be saying!" The ability to treat other people badly has been with us for a long time, perhaps forever. This is lamentable, and all we can do is notice when it happens.

This was most noticeable in the cafeteria, that was mostly empty. I remember it being full of people enjoying good food.

Walmart should be noticing that sales are down. But it has the same attitude toward itself - it treats itself badly.

Tools and Weapons

This book just came out today, and I got the Kindle version for my Fire tablet.

I just highlighted this "Companies that create technology must accept greater responsibility for the future."

It was written by Microsoft.

The next chapter is about the Cloud, and the Data it contains. This is Big Stuff.

The Temptation to Not Be

This movement had not been powerful, because it did not seem possible.

But once it was shown to be possible (and fairly easy) lots of people got on this bandwagon, and it became popular.

Everyone wants to be popular, and being that way is so easy!

Depression

We live in a depressing world, whether we realize it or not.

If we realize it. we are a long ways ahead.

Just now, my new Android sounded off. I picked it up, but I could see no instructions. What was I supposed to do with it?

We have the same problem, on a global scale. What are we supposed to do about it?

For most people this is easy. They can simply say: "What problem?"

But they usually go beyond that. They just don't ignore problems, they create them. I can't believe how many people I have known who have destroyed themselves.

They cannot be good to themselves. And cannot realize this.

A Fast-changing World

This has many effects, good and bad. We are pleased with the good but overlook the bad.

My objective, in writing this. is to clarify the bad effects.

Basically, this is simple: our values get confused. There are so many of them we settle for the simplest ones, that are usually defective, ethically. People want things to be simple.

This is why we are in such bad shape. Good thinking takes some careful thought, it is hard work. And most people would rather not do it.

They have to consider many factors, that interact with each other.

I am taking a course now, from DAPP University, that is explaining Facebook's Libra cryptocurrency and blockchain. The basics are simple, but there are a huge number of variables.

Is this a problem? Not really, all living beings contain immense numbers of interacting and evolving variables. Changes that work are kept, and those that don't are forgotten.

The designers of Libra know it is an experiment. and they expect some substantial changes.

The Android Documentation Nightmare

I just got back from having my SIM card switched to my latest Android, the Pixel XL. And I am exhausted, even though someone else did all the work,

My knees are so sore I can hardly walk.

We have been a species capable of rapid change (compared to all the other species). but the changes we are going through now, are more than we can manage.

I am not saying we must stop changing (as many people are). But I am saying we must understand the changes we are making.

When I first got into computers everyone was saying how lousy the documentation was. Now that I am getting in the latest software, we should be saying the same thing. We are trying to move too fast.

We don't know what we are getting into.

A Gringo in Costa Rica

This complex behavior is especially noticeable in his Banking.

Finding a house run by an American was a lucky break for me. But he was not entirely American: he was partly American and partly Tico, with little awareness of the difference.

I could see this in the banking he does in Costa Rica (where we live) and the banking he does in Kentucky (where he is from).

Two people in one body, but two banks.

Large Cultural Gaps

The worst thing about these gaps is that people do not notice them, and they happen rapidly - in less than a generation.

The biggest gap now is between Computer people and Industrial people - and an even larger group, composed of people who cannot tell the difference.

We are living in a world that is changing rapidly, we can all agree on that. But we cannot agree on its disastrous consequence, a global inability to understand what is going on.

From Gestalt to NLP

This was part of my transition into and out of the Sixties - that actually lasted from the Sixties to the Eighties, depending on where you were.

In the Sixties, I was still an Electronic Engineer, specializing in Radars that protected us from Soviet bombers. By the time the Nineties arrived, the Computer did too, the world had changed, and the Soviets were no longer.

In thirty years the world had changed completely, but we did not realize this!

A Sudden Illness

New Yorker

I can still read and as this posting in my blog shows, can read and write.

It continues to amaze me that most people are not interested.

That ALL Shall be Saved

Yale University Press

In this momentous book, David Bentley Hart makes the case that nearly two millennia of dogmatic tradition have misled readers on the crucial matter of universal salvation. On the basis of the earliest Christian writings, theological tradition, scripture, and logic, Hart argues that if God is the good creator of all, he is the savior of all, without fail. And if he is not the savior of all, the Kingdom is only a dream, and the creation something considerably worse than a nightmare. But it is not so. There is no such thing as eternal damnation; all will be saved. With great rhetorical power, wit, and emotional range, Hart offers a new perspective on one of Christianity’s most important themes.

Somewhat to my surprise, this is interesting reading!

It fits nicely in my Kindle library.

My Nephew Christian

I sent this to Christian first, for his comments. He wanted me to add that he now has a hypnosis business.

He is the son of my brother Steve Smith. Christian attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, for four years. This college was sponsored by the RLDS church. His mother and father were both active in this.

I do not know what degree he attained, but he wanted to get an advanced degree in Philosophy, at one time. But he taught for the Peace Corp instead, teaching English in Ukraine, and learning Russian at the same time.

He then married a young woman, Christie Skoor, whose family was also active in the Church, and they became missionaries for the Church in Eastern Europe.

This appointment did not last long, probably because the Church was going through huge changes,  becoming The Community of Christ.

They returned to Seattle, Christie's home town, and raised their three daughters. With Chris doing most of the raising. Christie had several jobs and was the primary breadwinner. Chris (Christian) was working part-time, on the weekend, for the Church. They became Chris and Christie Skoorsmiath.

Then the Church had a financial crisis, and could not employ him anymore. His father had retired and was working for the Church, as a volunteer.

I am adding this to my blog, to show other people how interesting our family is.

Stuff that makes You Smarter

I have said, over and over, there is no such thing. But maybe I was wrong.

I bought an Android and decided to buy the latest one, a Pixel XL, for $200, that Google makes itself.

I bought it from Amazon, and it took forever to arrive.

Aeropost, that moved it from Miami to Costa Rica for me, seemed to think Google was making me too smart, giving me too much of an advantage, and they could charge extra for that.

Companies are producing similar products for the Laptop: the IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Microsoft's are Visual Studio and VS Code. It wants its developers to be better than anybody's else's developers. But when the other developers work for Google, you have to be almost supernatural.

Being a developer is stressful, no one claims otherwise, But the pay is outstanding, and they are always attending conferences to help each other out.

Still want to know more? Track down the FeedBurner links. It's a Web 2.0 service.

What is real about Digital Technology?

Suppose I measure something and send a message "This is one meter high!" What have I done?

I have made a measurement and transmitted the length of that measurement. Nothing more or less.

At one time, measuring the distance around Africa was just such a problem. People thought this information might be valuable, but they could not be sure. Even after making the measurement they could not be sure, they had to know what was at these exotic destinations.

Digital technology was the same, they had measurements but nothing else, Imagine their surprise when they learned this was valuable in itself! It didn't seem right. There was no demand for Computer engineers.

I can remember when this happened, back in the Fifties. I was an Electronic Engineering student at the U of Illinois. Digital Computers had been invented, but the Engineering Department did not think they were much good.

They taught a course in analog computing because they measured real stuff: voltage and current. Measuring what people wanted was measuring something that did not exist.

Gradually, they realized this was something also, even if they did not know what it was, It took them 500 years to know something they knew already - what people wanted was important!

And was available at their nearest shopping center.

What is the Future for Us?

Is it going to be like the past? I am going to assume so. It will be like the change we went through with the introduction of the Computer, the biggest change in history. We did not change much at all. We just thought we did.

We might have gotten worse, I was in Silicon Valley, and I could not stand the place. People with Computers were strange beings with some big problems. They do not like other people, for one thing.

We have been telling ourselves the opposite. "Look how much better we are!" When this improvement has not amounted to much.

If we examine the many details of how we operate at the microscopic level (how the brain operates, for example) we will see how few of them have changed. They can't change very much, or we would die.

One of the most fundamental attributes we have, medically and mentally, is "No changes!" It took us millions of years to get where we are, and we are not throwing that away.

"Yes." you will agree, but some things have to change or we (and our world) will not survive!

This reasoning makes no difference at all. We will pass out of existence, like the dinosaurs.

Inventing new species is easier than changing old ones.

We will change, we can be sure of that. But what we will change to we cannot predict.

Blogger has a Problem

Blogger is a free service provided by Google, that I have been using for years. This morning it has a bug!

If you can read this, the bug has been fixed - and proves one thing: any software must be tested.

God does not use these things (He does not need them) We need them, and we can only hope they work properly.

How we'll earn money in a future without jobs

We will not have much choice. The Computer has moved into our world and it is not going away. We are working for it, whether we want to or not.

It needs us to give it something it does not have, out of the box - some smarts. It wants us to provide the brains to fit in that box. And a few of us (maybe one percent) are doing just that. And the results are amazing!

What are the 99 percent doing?

They are producing different computers and (sometimes) different people to work them.

People and their Computers have a problem - they know what they are needed for, and they know they cannot provide this.

The Rust Belt

I was born in born (in 1936) in my father's home town of Ft. Madison. Iowa. on the Mississippi River.

The West End of town (where we lived ) was dominated the Santa Fe Railroad.
The End End by the Sheaffer Pen company. It was an industrial city of about 15.000 people.

WWII made a boom for the railroads. and every other business. especially munitions.

We bought a new house.in Ft. Madison. and in 1947. moved to my mother's home town of Nauvoo, Illinois, across the River. A fruit-growing town of about 1,000 people. It was beautiful, and I loved it.

However, as described, by Wikipedia, the American Midwest become the American Rust Belt, with few jobs, and little manufacturing,

There were plenty of Offices, places where people like me hated to work.

Banking

My Brother Steve fixed me up with a joint account with Wells Fargo.

I had moved to Costa Rica, but I used my Wells Fargo debit card to get cash (in Colones) for groceries and for purchases online from Amazon.

Once a month my Social Security retirement income was deposited to my Wells Fargo account.

I lived with Marielos and her son Augusto for five years before I moved to Orosi and rented an apartment from Ray Renolds. He insisted I get an account with Banco Costa Rica (BCR).

Meanwhile, I was getting a lot of charges to my Wells Fargo debit card, and I asked Wells Fargo to cancel that card, and give me another one. They canceled my card, but would not give me another one!

Ray got my Social Security income transferred to BCR, but this didn't happen for the month of September. Steve got this wired to Ray's bank in Kentucky instead, and Ray transferred this to me, in Cash (Colones). Things were getting complicated!

Wells Fargo had an excellent Internet banking service. I could log into my account, and see how much money I had  And see each charge that was made to my debit card for the last month.

BCR does not provide this service. Latin America has a backward economy.

My New Camera

Amazon

It's not very big, but it has plenty of buttons and all of them do something.

Learning how to use it is an educational experience.

Monday, September 16, 2019

It's too complicated!

I spent some time reading the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) this morning about Syria, and came to this conclusion myself.

A more accurate word would be complex, a situation where everything affects everything else.

A common situation that we (the richest countries in the world) are poorly equipped to handle.

The Credit Economy

This was made possible by the invention of the Credit Card and its close relative, the Debit Card. And an invention in marketing: the time payment.

The net result was that the banks owned more and more. And sometimes too much.

Consider Real Estate.

My parents were able to retire because their house was worth so much. Lots of other people were not so lucky, and in 1978 the whole economy went into a Recession.

People knew money was not worth as much, so they invested in their housing. Imagine their shock when this was not worth as much either!.

They voted for men who promised to make them great again.

There was another complication: the money in all those credit cards could easily be taken by people who didn't own the card!

The protection against this was simple: monitor the amount spent closely, and demand a refund if the charge was not authorized!

But the bank behind the card must make it easy to do this. And in Costa Rica (and many other places) the banks will not do this.

Incompetent banking is as dangerous as dishonest banking.

The Hype and Reality of Teaching Kids to Code

Medium

This guy takes on the educational establishment that wants to keep things simple because it thinks children are simple.

When in fact, children are not simple, only the educators are.

The only way to learn to code is by watching other coders doing it.

Some People are Weak, and Cannot be Toughened Up

The American military knows this and tries to not get them in its ranks. I used this to my advantage during the Vietnam War.
,
After most of the unfortunates passed their physical exam and were drafted into the War. I asked to see a psychologist. They kept me overnight in a hotel, and a guy showed up the next morning, asked me a few questions, and then gave me a deferment!

This is the only situation I know of, where it pays to be stupid.

No commander wants idiots behind him that he cannot depend on. And he gets rid of them, as fast as he can. He can tolerate some stupidity, and even prefer it, but enough is enough.

I met a guy in Cartago whose mother had married an American when she was an attractive young Tica., lived with him in the States, and had a son wno was not too bright. He became a paratrooper and wrecked his body.

His mother and his wife cooked me a fine meal.

Destructiveness

This is now more appealing than Constructiveness. But we cannot recognize this and can do nothing about it.

We cannot say "We have become destructive!" Because people will be offended. They prefer to think they are basically good, and their badness is some kind of accident. When they are basically bad and intend to remain that way.

I am this way also, with a difference. I can easily feel how destructive and hateful I can be, at times.

This is true of all of us: we exist on a spectrum of good and bad. But when we go over the tipping point into the bad, the situation cannot easily be reversed.

I repeat: we are now destroying ourselves, but forbid anyone to recognize this.

The Alliance Between Kanye and Trump

Medium

I never thought about Trump in this way, but from now on I definitely will.

I disagree with the writer, however. Women are still in charge because they don't have to be anything else.

Back when they were just a fertilized egg, they could make babies, when the other sex could not. They were not as likely to be a CIO, and make a perfect ass of themselves, or to be the pres, but they could watch on the sidelines, while the men burned themselves out, trying to satisfy them.

A Chicano Family in Costa Rica

I went to Cartago yesterday to get a few things at Aeropost (that had been flown down from Miami) and a few groceries at a WalMart store there.

At Aerropost I met Moises, who invited me to his house to meet his family who fixed me a nice, simple meal.

His family consists of his mother, his wife, and his two daughters, who are about 12. He is the man in the family but has not worked for years.

His mother is the head of the family and was living in the US. There must have been a man in the family at one time, but he has vanished. This is typical of marginal communities in the US, the men cannot support a family, and are often alcoholics.

Her only asset was her son, who joined the American military and became a paratrooper. Three years later, he got a medical discharge and the whole family was living off of that.

Somehow, he could not explain how, they were living in a small house in Costa Rica, and remodeling it constantly, using local help.

This whole scene is hard to describe and includes a small black poodle, who protects the family from harm.

Rule of the Rich and Powerful

This is usually contrasted with Democracy. But as anyone cans see, Democracy is not working very well.

Capitalism seems to be working better, economically, but mainly for the rich and powerful.

I am throwing out some big words here, that few want to define. They will say, in fact, they cannot be defined, and we should not even try.

I say we should try, and not trying is one of our problems.

I am watching Microsoft Inspire 2019 where some of Microsoft's cheerleaders (all men) are telling the world how great they are! And backing that up with some facts.

I am impressed. Microsoft is rich and is powerful. But is making the world run better.

This can be contrasted with China's rapid progress. They are saying "We are rich!" And they are. But good they are not.

Can the Computer make us Smarter?

Yes and No,

It makes smart people smarter and stupid people more stupid. And most people both smarter and stupider - depending on the circumstances,

This is explained by Norbert Weiner in The Human Use of Human Beings, Cybernetics and Society.

Our Attitude toward AI

What on earth is Artificial Intelligence?

We don't know what is (it is many things, actually) but we can easily tell what our attitude toward it is - the same as it is to ordinary intelligence.

We are suspicious of it because it gives smart people an advantage over the rest of us.

Organizations that Hate People

At the top of this list are the world's militaries, who not only kill people, but the budgets of many countries.

I worked for every one of the American services and cheerfully kept the generous salaries they offered.

But their behavior was nothing, compared to that exhibited in any office, where everyone in the office was wasting the efforts of everyone else.

Money Stuff

BloombergOpinion
I read this because it fascinates me, and it horrifies me.

When people get mixed up with the money, strange things happen. And the more the money, the stranger the things.

Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway

Wikipedia

The Railroads took over the world, from the middle of the 19th Century to the middle of the 20th.

My family was involved with the Santa Fe in Ft. Madison, Iowa. It's hard for me to remember now how important it was back then. The West End of the town was devoted to the Santa Fe, and the East to the Schaeffer Pen. (There was also a Penitentiary for the less fortunate.)

It is now part of the American Rust Belt, full of empty buildings. The only thing active there now is the Mississipi River, that is subject to frequent flooding.

Google, Android, Nexus

What I am going to say here is old news to the Computer industry. But was never recognized by the Computer users themselves, who only wanted to use their Laptops and Phones, and had no interest in understanding them.

Goggle set out destroy Windows Phone by giving away Android for free! This worked because it made Android phones cheaper.

Many Android phones appeared on the market. The only serious competition was from Apple with its iPhone.

But there was a problem: manufacturers could use any part of the Android software they wanted to.  Google had no control over what went into them.

So Google came out with its own brand: Nexus, and I have ordered one of these from Amazon because I know exactly what I am getting.

They cost more, but not that much more.

Ray and I have just had a Fight

He said he was tired of taking care of me. I didn't say anything. but thought to myself that he could be bossy at times.

Soon after I started living in his house, He insisted that I have an account with Banco Costa Rica (BCR), not the Banco National, where most Gringos have their accounts.

I didn't argue with him about this, I could see this was what I\he wanted, so I let him have his way. I didn't need another bank, because I was using Wells Fargo, in the States, at the time.

Then Wells Fargo canceled my debit card there, but would not give me another one. All of a sudden, I needed another bank!

Ray became helpful because he speaks Spanish. He arranged to have my SSA retirement funds every month transferred to BCR, instead of to Wells Fargo. This was a lot of work on his part.

I kept trying to enroll in the BCR because this would give me more control over my money. But this never worked out. And I finally figured out why. BCR was sending me an email as part of the enrollment process.

Ray insisted I copy this email to him, right away, I didn't\ know why at the time, but I finally figured out why: This would give Ray insight into my account!

This didn't work because every email has a return address. BCR just compared the return address on his email with the one they sent me, and it was obvious they were not from the same person. They canceled the enrollment process, much to Ray's fury.

As he said himself "This made his blood boil!"

The Mexican Problem

You can see this the moment you cross the border. You have crossed from North America to Latin America, and are in a different world, speaking a different language. And in a different culture.

No one needs to tell you "You are in a different culture now!' Because that is obvious.

North America has the culture of Northern Europe (England) and Latin America the culture of Southern Europe (Spain).

Spain, not too long ago, was the head of the Spanish Empire, the largest in the world!

This was replaced by the British Empire, that was even larger.

This was replaced by the Internet, that is not of this world at all!

Where does this leave people? Nowhere, someplace they have adapted to rapidly.

Without knowing it at all!

AMLO and the promise of transformation

Washington Post

The Post has added a new section in Spanish. But the English version is excellent also.

"Poor Mexico," has been said, "So far from God, and so close to America!"

AMLO is the new president of Mexico, and we have heard much about him. But this
article will not help his ratings.

A Bank as a Distributed Database

This is could be easily implemented, since all the components already exist, as Software.

Money in the bank would be represented as a number in a database variable.

Security would be a problem but would be handled as a problem in Computer Security, where many solutions are available.

Americans and Mexicans

When I was growing up, in the Fifties, we were on friendly terms. and lived and worked together easily. And even intermarried. Jeb Bush's wife, for example, was a Mexican.

When my parents retired, they lived for a while in Mexico, like many other Americans did (including many alcoholics).

I had the distinction of residing for a few days in a Mexican jail!

My Brother in the Culture War

I didn't know there was such a thing, but he knew it, was an active part of it and helped win it.

This is not apparent at first glance. He can say, successfully: he is just an ordinary guy. It is only a coincidence that he has backed, and still backs, all of America's recent wars.

He knows who the Good Guys are, and he is part of them.

What I need from Banco Costa Rica

What I need is an App like most banks in the affluent world provide: that gives me access to the status of my account.

Banks everywhere hold money that belongs to others, and it is the responsibility of their governments to ensure the safety of that money. Needless to say, some governments are better at this than others.

Latin America, where I live, is not very good at this. The whole idea of taking care of someone else's money is foreign to them. They are only interested in taking care of their own money.

The idea of taking care of everyone's money was a British idea and resulted in an affluent North America, and an impoverished Latin America.

The idea of an Economy has gradually gained ground everywhere. As part of the EU, Europeans are now familiar with the idea but have little idea how to attain it. And as Brexit shows, they are rapidly losing it.

How do I want this App to work?

The Wells Fargo Bank, in the US, provides an example. When you log into your account, it tells you how much money you have in it.

This is followed by a detailed list of all your expenses for the past month - including your credit card expenses. You can dispute any of these expenses, and probably get you money back.

The idea is simple: you are in control of your money!

In Latin America, the Rich and Powerful have control of everything, including the Banks.

Money Stuff

BloombergOpinion

I sit here in Costa Rica. at my Laptop, while the thunder rolls over my head.

This newsletter is about the stock market, which has also experienced some stormy weather.

This guy sounds as sensible as the Virgin Mary, who got pregnant anyway.

The Rapid Growth of Software

I am not sure if this is a good thing or not.

There seem to be two things in the world now: People and Computers. And Computers are the fastest growing. And they are powered entirely by Software.

And People are saying "So what?"

To which I reply "Because they are now running the world!" To which they will reply, "Not all of it, but much of it!'

They won't deny their importance, but they think this is exaggerated.

I will only say one thing: they are smart and we are stupid. And in the competition for the earth's resources (especially its intellectual resources), they are way ahead.

This will not be obvious to most of the People in the World. who will be satisfied with a few crumbs from the table. But the Smart Ones will be dining to excess and will be lucky to survive.

We have inherited a New World we don't understand.

Banking in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an unusual country, that provides social services for its people.

Banking services do not blend well with this emphasis on social service.

This incompatibility is a problem here, as it is also has been in the United States.

I just finished reading about the Costa Rica Civil War in Wikipedia. I have also read somewhat about American Financial History - which resulted in the death of Alexander Hamilton.

And I have been trying to do my banking here, now that I am a resident, This has not worked well at all!

Costa Rica is not technically competent in many ways, including banking.

Losing Religion and Finding Ecstasy in Houston

New Yorker

This was not the world I grew up in.

I grew up in small-time America, it the corners between Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. But we were just as righteous as anyone could be.

We didn't have the money they did, but we had everything else.

Gruen transfer

Wikipedia

In shopping mall design, the Gruen transfer (also known as the Gruen effect) is the moment when consumers enter a shopping mall or store and, surrounded by an intentionally confusing layout, lose track of their original intentions, making consumers more susceptible to make impulse buys. It is named for Austrian architect Victor Gruen

In a speech in London in 1978, Victor Gruen disavowed shopping mall developments as having "bastardized" his ideas:[5][3] "I refuse to pay alimony for those bastard developments".

The shopping center, however, is where Americans (and their cars) love to be.

The Husband became a House-Husband

This was much easier and was approved of by everyone!

By everyone in their microculture, that felt like a macroculture to them.

This would be a good time to discuss culture, a very big subject.

In our natural state, we lived in tribes of no more than 100 people, where we knew everyone in the tribe.

We invented storytelling - and competed to see who could tell the best stories. The best storytellers had a career!

Until writing was invented on clay tablets. There were so many of these, the British used them for ballast on their railroads!

When Paper was invented, in its many forms, Clay became obsolete, because it was so heavy! Paper was a better medium for writing and remained so for thousands of years until the Fall of the Roman Empire.

"Why the House-Husband?" You may ask. To answer that, I would have to describe our culture and the advantages of that.

Including the advantages of woman leaders.

They have to Have Children

And they have to treat them badly.

Because this is what everyone else is doing.

I must say more about this because we can be good and bad in so many ways.

Costa Rica, where I now live, loves its children. but it cannot help them be organized. This is a life skill they do not have and are not likely to acquire.

They are averse to being organized and do not want to be that way.

They are poor, but cannot understand why.

The Eternal Struggle between Good and Evil

The reason for this is simple: we are both good and evil ourselves.

But we tend to overlook the evil. And this tendency makes it much worse.

I will be explicit: we are causing global warming, but do not think it is much of a problem!

Growth is good, even if it destroys everything.

Growth can be accomplished in many ways: by having a better house or car, for example.

By not thinking about what is going on.

Banco Costa Rica is Hard to Work With

I spent most of this morning working at it.

Their nearest office is in Paraiso, a short bus ride away. When I got off the bus I was feeling woozy, as I navigated the crowded sidewalks.

When I got inside, all the clerks were busy. I told them I wanted to enroll in their banking service, and this they seemed to understand, as they passed this message upward. Alejandro Quesada Martinez sent an email to our house in Orosi, giving me the information I needed to enroll. Another clerk gave another sheet of paper, with more information on it. The amount of paper consumed here is amazing!

As soon as Ray gets back, I will put him to work on my BCR forms. He doesn't seem to mind this.

Email Address, but no Email

I just noticed this with my friend Yami.

I walked over to her place to renew our friendship.

She had bad news for me: her father had died at age 90.

I noticed a laptop at her place, and asked her about it. "It was broke," she said. No wonder she was not answering my emails to her.

This is an important part of Computer Communications.

A message always includes the address of the sender and the receiver. That may be one person or many persons.

In the case of the Internet, different parts of the message may traverse different paths and are reassembled at the destination.

This sounds complicated, but it happens millions of times every second. And the global economy depends on it.

Too Many Realities for Me to Handle

I looked up Reality on Merriam-Webster. It says:

Something that is neither derivative nor dependent but exists necessarily. Neat definition!

I suppose this includes the poop I made this morning.

But does it include the Android Phone I recently purchased? I am now struggling to import my Google Contacts from my Windows Laptop to it.

Samsung has a neat app that will do this for me, if I can figure out how to use it. Two Realities are involved here, and moving between them leaves me disoriented. I need something that helps me know where I am!

We need to recognize that these multiple realities exist, and to recognize when we are moving between them. This happens when changing religions, or using a recreational drug.
