The RLDS were morally superior, but their president had to be a direct descendent of Joseph Smith, and as time went on, there were not many of those, especially those who were capable leaders.
In this decrepit situation, a man like Veazy could easily take over, and build the church he wanted.
But the LDS. on the other side of the mountains, were discovering the advantages of adapting to American culture.
