Great Britain has been doing this for a long time.
Once it grew large quantities of Opium in Burma, that it imported into China. Fighting two Opium Wars to force China to let it continue this highly lucrative trade. See Wikipedia for an explanation of these wars,
Recently, it has escorted British oil tankers through the Tonkin Gulf. Iran sent its own gunboats to force the tanker into moving closer to the Iranian coast. But the British gunboat had a much larger gun that could have sunk the Iranian boats easily, and the Iranian boats withdrew immediately.
