My father's focus, when he was trying to start businesses in our hometown of Nauvoo, Illinois (population 1000) - was always on making bread, his own way, using his own recipe.
He started by making his own whole wheat flour - but found that did not sell too well. So he opened his own bakery, where he could make his own bread, in considerable quantities.
But he ran into problems here - people wanted their bread baked fresh, every day. To do this, he would have needed another person to deliver his bread, every day - to the nearest large town of Ft. Madison, Iowa, where there were not many grocery stores.
The problem here was our location - if we had lived in a large city, and operated our bakery there - distribution would not have been much of a problem. There would have plenty of stores to sell our bread to. But trying to do this from our tiny town, was impossible.
Dad finally gave up, sold the business - and retired in Mexico.
